Malabari Fish Biryani

Malabari fish biryani recipe

I am really very happy to post the recipe of Fish Biryani / Meen Biryani, as this is my favorite type of biryani. Whenever we are eating biryani from outside, obviously my  order would be fish biryani / prawns Biryani. I can eat fish biryani three times a day:)!! So you can imagine how crazy I am for this yummy dish..

Recently I read a quote about biryani..” I can’t make everyone happy all the time. I am not biryani ! ” It’s true , right??So far , I have not seen anybody who don’t like biryani. Instead I have seen some people avoiding Biryani because of some health issues. But none of them told that we hate biryani..Biryani is not something healthy, but it is that dish which can bring a smile on everyone’s face..Malabari Fish Biryani recipe

In India, Biryani is a must have main dish for all the occasions. Without Biryani the menu would be incomplete. So do the celebrations..For me any special occasion is just incomplete without this delicious dish. So this is my second biryani recipe in this month.. One more biryani recipe is getting ready in the back stage..Later I am planning to do a biryani recipe round up:) Malabari Fish Biryani recipe

  • Yogurt- 2 tablespoon
  • Cilantro leaves- a small bunch (finely chopped )
  • Mint leaves- a small bunch
  • Same oil in which we fried the fish
  • Whole garam masala – as per required
    garam masala
(pepper, cardamom, bay leaves, cinnamon, fennel seeds, star anise, cloves )as shown in the image
  • Salt- as per required

Ingredients for final Garnishing and dum:

  • Onion- 1 (sliced)
  • Cashew nuts- a handful
  • Raisins- a handful
  • Ghee-as per required or say, 2 tablespoon
  • Cilantro leaves- a small bunch ( chopped )
  • Garam masala powder– 1/2 teaspoon
  • Pineapple rings- 4 ( I used the tin ones with sugar syrup )

How to make:

  1. First of all mix all the ingredients except fish and oil in order to make a marinade . Once the marinade is done, apply it to the fish slices evenly. Then let it sit for at least an hour or so.
  2. Make a thick paste out of green chilly, garlic and ginger without much water content.
  3. Now let’s prepare the rice. Boil enough water to cook the rice in a vessel ( say it should reach more than half the level of  the vessel ). Add the whole garam masala spices, salt to the boiling water. Then add the washed rice to this boiling water and let it cook. Once the rice is almost done, switch off the flame. Drain the water from rice by pouring it to a strainer. Then keep it aside.Biryani rice cooking
  4. Now let’s fry the fish. Heat a pan, once it is hot enough pour the oil. Deep fry the fish and keep it aside.Malabari Fish Biryani recipe
  5. Switch off the flame and pour this oil to the vessel in which we are going to make the masala for the biryani. First add onion , saute it for sometime and let it cook in medium flame with lid closed. After 7-8 minutes, add salt and stir nicely. Once the onion becomes tender and soft, add the ginger- garlic, chilly paste along with the spice powders and cilantro leaves, mint leaves. Mix it nicely.Malabari Fish Biryani recipe
  6. Later add tomatoes and press well with the spatula to make it a thick paste. Cook this for 10 minutes on low flame with lid closed. Once it is done pour the yogurt to this. Mix well and add the fried fish to this masala. Now we have to be very careful. While stirring the fish slices shouldn’t break. So no hard stirring. Cook this in low flame with lid closed for 4-5 minutes and switch off the flame.Malabari Fish Biryani recipe
  7. Next step is to fry the ingredients for garnishing. Heat pan, add ghee and fry raisins ,cashew nuts, onion separately. Keep all the things aside.
  8. Now let’s do the Biryani dum process. Heat the cooking vessel, add 1 teaspoon ghee and add the first layer of rice..next add the Fish masala , spread evenly over the rice and then layer it without breaking fish pieces..Then finish it off with another layer of rice.Malabari Fish Biryani recipeGarnish the top with fried ingredients , pineapple and cilantro leaves. Also sprinkle the  garam masala powder all over and make few small wholes and pour drops of ghee into these wholes. Close the lid and Keep a heavy object over it in order to make it air tight. Then keep the flame to sim and cook this for 10-15 minutes.Malabari Fish Biryani recipe

Even after switching off the flame, keep it closed. After 30 minutes or so you can serve it . While serving you have to be careful. First take the topmost rice to a bowl. Later carefully take the fish slices. Now in the pot there would be the bottom rice along with masala. Stir it nicely and all the recipe should be mixed well with the rice. Later while serving , put this masala rice, fish pieces topped with some white rice from the top which we kept aside.Malabari Fish Biryani recipe
